Three thousand years ago, a state rose along the Wei River and was named Zheng. The state fell. The name survived. Dynasties came and went. The character 郑 remained, passed down by people who felt, without always knowing why, that it was theirs to keep.

三千年前，渭水之畔有郑国。国灭了，名字留下来了。它不需要城池庇护，不需要王朝背书。它自有生命。

The ancestor left Yongchun County, Fujian, and boarded a ship at Quanzhou. The sea changed the sound. Zhèng became Teh. In Malaya, the name was written on every deed and doorpost. To be born a Teh is to carry something across the full distance between those mountains and this child.

祖先从永春县出发，从泉州港上了船，在南洋落脚。「郑」读作「Teh」，字未变，乡音换了。这个姓从此刻在每一代人的门楣上。做一个 Teh，是接过一支古老的炬火，往前走下去。

Inside 珳 is the jade radical. In classical China, jade was moral, not merely beautiful. The Book of Rites names eleven virtues in jade. The greatest is patience. A gentleman's character, the ancients said, is like jade: not because it is perfect, but because it endures.

「珳」藏玉。《礼记》言玉有十一德，最要者：韧。古人以玉比君子，不因玉冷，而因玉「持久」。

Jade does not form quickly. Thousands of years, in the dark, under pressure it did not choose. When it finally surfaces, it does not announce itself. It is simply what it is: luminous, patient, genuine all the way through. This character asks the same of him. Not perfection. The kind of depth that cannot be performed. Only grown.
