The Story of a Name  ·

A name is the first gift
a parent gives.

Before the world can see him. Before he draws breath, cries, or opens his eyes to the light. The name is already there, waiting inside the silence between two parents. Shaped from meaning and sound, from history and hope, from everything they have learned about what a life can be. It travels ahead of him, into a future they will not live to see fully. This is what it means to name a child: to make a wish so precise it has its own sound.

Zhèng · Teh
The Family Name

Three thousand years ago, a feudal state rose along the banks of the Wei River and was given the name Zheng. It did not last forever. States rarely do. But the name survived what built it. Dynasties fell, armies passed, and still the character 郑 remained, carried in the mouths of descendants who did not always know its origins but felt, without knowing why, that it was theirs to keep. Names are like that. They outlast the civilizations that coin them.

When the ancestor left Yongchun County, in the hills of Quanzhou, and made his way down to the port, the character came with him. The sea changed the sound. Zhèng became Teh. But the character endured. In Malaya, on every deed and doorpost, in every generation's first lesson about who they are, the name reappeared. To be born a Teh is to carry something across water, across time, across the full distance between the mountains of Fujian and a child born on a Thursday morning in May.

Every Teh before him.
Every Teh after.
First Given Character

Look closely at 珳 and you will find the jade radical at its core. Not the king who commands, but the ancient marker for what is most precious. In classical China, jade was not merely ornamental. It was moral. The Book of Rites lists eleven virtues embodied in jade: benevolence in its warmth, wisdom in its translucence, courage in its unyieldingness. A gentleman's character, the ancients said, is like jade. Not because it is perfect, but because it is patient.

Jade is not made quickly. It forms over thousands of years, in the dark, under pressure it did not choose. And when it finally comes to light, it does not announce itself. It simply is what it is: luminous, patient, utterly genuine. This is what this character asks of him. Not perfection, not brilliance, but the particular kind of depth that cannot be performed. That can only be grown.

Not loud.
Enduring.

Second Given Character

禧 appears at weddings, new years, the first days of a new life. It is pressed in red on doorways and written on the first pages of new chapters. It does not mean the happiness of a single moment. It means the happiness that runs deep enough to become a kind of constancy, a gift not only to the one who carries it but to everyone who enters the room. Auspicious joy. Gladness that cannot help but become contagious.

To give a child the character 禧 is to make a declaration that goes beyond wishing. It is to say: we expect this of you, and we will work to give it to you, and when we cannot, know that we believed it possible. That wherever you walk, you carry the capacity for joy. That your life will not be measured in accomplishments alone, but in the quality of gladness you bring to the ordinary days.

The happiness that
spills over.

Patience and gladness. Formed in dark. Spilling into light.

Two characters, one name. Not opposites. Complements. The patience of jade and the overflow of joy, placed side by side like two parents standing together at the edge of a new life. They form a complete wish: not that his life be easy, not that it be without sorrow, but that when difficulty comes, as it will, he will have both the depth to endure it and the gladness to return from it. And then return again.

And to the world, he is 而在这个世界面前,他是

LANDO

Lando. One word, three syllables, unmistakable. It does not need a translation. It does not need a footnote. It moves through languages the way certain people move through rooms: with presence, without effort, noticed before it arrives. His parents gave him a name that would travel. A name that could sit beside his Chinese name without apology or compromise. Because they believe this about him: he will carry both names into the world, and he will carry them without choosing between them. The world is wide. He was made for it.

Lando。

And then there is the other story. The true one. His mother had this name long before she had him. In 2025, a young British driver named Lando Norris stood on the Formula 1 podium for the first time as world champion. Somewhere, a woman who would one day be his mother was watching. She saw the name on the screen. Something in her settled. Not a decision, exactly. More like a recognition. The kind that arrives not as a thought but as a certainty. When the time came, the name was already waiting. There was nothing to discuss.

Naturally, Dad agreed. He was presented with a conclusion, not a question. And he found, to his own surprise, that he agreed completely.
01 Arrival 降临

He's here.

A child arrives and does not announce itself. It simply appears, and in appearing, changes everything: the light in the room, the weight of ordinary time, the meaning of the word home. Ten in the morning on the fourteenth of May, 2026. Outside, the world continued without pause. Inside that room, two people became three. And the three of them, for a moment, were all the world there was.

Dear Lando,

We did not know, until you, what it meant to love something you cannot fully protect. Before you, love was something between equals: mutual, reciprocated, balanced. You arrived and made it asymmetrical. You gave us nothing back on that first day except your presence, and that was more than enough. We held you and understood, for the first time, that some loves are not chosen. They arrive. And they stay. And they quietly change the shape of every love that came before.

This page is yours. It will not be able to hold everything. No page can. But it can hold the outline, the shape, the beginning of the record. One day you will read these words and they will seem like things written by people you have never fully known, which is true of all parents: they existed before you, and you will never entirely reach back into that existence. But you will know this: you were wanted. You were celebrated before you knew enough to celebrate yourself. You arrived into a love that had already been waiting.

Be curious, even when certainty would be easier. Be kind, even when the world is not. And when you are lost, remember that somewhere on this earth are two people who chose your name with extraordinary care, because they believed it mattered what a person is called, and what that name asks them to become. We will not always be there. But the name will. And it will remind you.
